Custom-built AWD RV van

Not every journey calls for a large, truck-based expedition vehicle. An AWD RV van allows you to travel self-sufficiently in a compact and agile vehicle, with the freedom to venture beyond the beaten track. All-wheel drive provides traction on sand, snow, gravel, and wet roads, without sacrificing maneuverability. At Twiga Travelcars, we build custom camper units tailored to the routes you’ll actually be driving and the way you want to travel.

AWD RV vans from Twiga Travelcars

Twiga Travelcars builds the living unit for AWD RV vans, designed to fit a four-wheel-drive chassis. A campervan is often a converted van or bus, making it slightly smaller than an expedition camper built on a truck chassis. During construction, we therefore take the available space into account, as well as the weight distribution and structural strength needed for unpaved roads and changing conditions. The technology, body and layout are designed to work together, so the campervan is comfortable while still performing well on challenging terrain.

Every Twiga unit is tailored to your specific travel plans. Components are selected for durability and ease of use, and installed in such a way that maintenance on the road is no problem. Here is what you can expect:

  • Custom build based on your travel goals, wishes and practical needs
  • Thoughtful engineering and smart system choices
  • Twiga After Sale Service

Who is an AWD RV van suitable for?

An AWD RV van is ideal for travellers who like to be self-sufficient on the road, but do not need a large expedition vehicle. You are looking for more freedom than a standard campervan can offer, while still wanting your vehicle to remain compact and agile. This can be especially useful in mountain villages, on narrow roads, in busy cities or on routes where a large truck-based expedition camper is less practical.

What our ambassadors say about us

Travelling off the beaten track

The strength of an AWD RV van is not only found in its technology, but above all in the travel experience it offers. It allows you to choose routes that are less obvious with a conventional campervan, such as wintry roads in Scandinavia, gravel tracks in the Alps, wet forest roads in Eastern Europe or unpaved stretches leading to a quiet spot by the sea. In moments like these, you need to be able to trust that your campervan can handle the conditions, and that is where an all-wheel-drive vehicle is a sensible choice.

Travel compactly with comfort

Space in an AWD RV van is not unlimited, which means smart choices are essential. The available space is more limited than in a large truck-chassis motorhome, but that does not mean comfort has to be sacrificed. It is all about a well-considered layout in which sleeping, seating, cooking, storage and moving around all come together. Every element needs to have a clear purpose.

For us, comfort is not only about beautiful materials or a pleasant seating area. It is also found in the practical details. Can you easily reach your belongings? Is there enough ventilation? Is the heating reliable? Can you use the kitchen when it is raining outside? Can you unwind easily after a long day on the road? A well-built camper is comfortable to use, even when conditions are less than ideal.

Self-sufficient on the road

Those who choose an AWD RV van often want to be able to travel independently for longer periods of time. To make that possible, systems for power, water, heating, cooling and communication are important. At Twiga Travelcars, we do not look at individual components in isolation, but at the vehicle as a whole. Batteries, solar panels, inverters, water tanks, filters, heating and cooling systems all need to work together. These systems also need to remain accessible for inspection and maintenance.

AWD RV vans we built before

Twiga Travelcars builds custom-made camperunits. We work with a range of base vehicles, depending on the travel goals and wishes of the traveller. For adventurous travellers looking for a relatively compact 4×4, a vehicle such as an Iveco Daily 4×4, or a comparable chassis, can be an interesting basis for a campervan. It offers more manoeuvrability than a large truck, while still providing plenty of possibilities for a serious camper build.

For example, we built a compact yet spacious 4.5-metre camper unit on a new Iveco Daily 4×4 for one of our customers. Read more about this project by clicking the button below.

The adventure of Esther and Charles

The story of Esther and Charles shows perfectly how an AWD RV van suits travellers who want to travel differently. After a camper holiday in Canada, they felt the desire for a vehicle for themselves: one that truly suited them. They chose an Iveco Daily 4×4. They did not want a large vehicle, but they did want to be fully self-sufficient.

During the build, they drove to Ooij almost every month to see the camper unit take shape. They have now travelled in it for a year and a half, covering more than 40,000 kilometres, and they call the vehicle their home on wheels.

What should you consider when choosing an AWD RV van?

Your personal AWD RV van starts with your travel plans. Sometimes, a relatively compact campervan is exactly the right choice. In other cases, a larger expedition vehicle may be a better fit for the journey.

Route and terrain

The route determines a great deal. Surface conditions, temperature, altitude, rain, snow and the availability of assistance all play a role. An AWD RV van can offer a great deal of freedom, but it needs to be built for the type of terrain you will actually encounter.

Weight and layout

In a compact campervan, weight is particularly important. Water, fuel, batteries, a spare wheel, interior fittings, tools and personal luggage all add up. A smart layout ensures that the vehicle drives well, remains safe and does not become unnecessarily heavy. This calls for choices that make sense both technically and practically.

Maintenance and accessibility

Adventurous travel calls for a preventive mindset. We prefer to build vehicles in such a way that important components remain accessible. Not only for a workshop, but also for you as a traveller. The better you understand where everything is located and how the systems work, the more confident you will feel on the road when something needs to be checked or fixed.

Twiga Travelcars helps building your dream journey

Having an AWD RV van built is more than a technical choice. It is about the way you want to travel, the freedom you are looking for and the places you want to go. Twiga Travelcars helps to translate those plans into a vehicle that works in practice. Thoughtfully built, suited to the way you use it and made for journeys that go far beyond a standard holiday.

We do not build from a standard checklist, but from your travel plans. That means we look at the base vehicle, the camper unit, safety, technology, comfort and maintenance as one complete whole.
